Welcome To The World: Week 1 Homework

Here is the first post.

Please respond to the following:

In a recent interview, journalist Robert Levine, author of Free Ride , responded to the anti-S.O.P.A. crowd by saying this:

Free speech is very important in the U.S. It’s a more important value than copyright. In most countries it is. But there’s an argument on the other side. There’s a great quote by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor that says: “The Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression. By establishing the marketable right to the use of one’s expression, copyright supplies an economic incentive to create and disseminate.” That’s a pretty powerful argument on the other side.

Respond to the quote in your own words. What does it mean? Do you agree or disagree?

  1. To me, this quote means that though free speech is a very important value in the United States of America, copyright is "the engine of free expression." This means that copy right itself is what provides us with the privilage of free speech and the right to express what we believe, Taking advantage of what's provided to us is the cause of all these conflicts.

  2. I agree with this quote. I believe that this passage is stating that copyrights helps people show others that that material is theirs and they have the right for it to not be taken away from them and then used without their permission. I also believe that copyrights help "tell" others that the copyrighted material is theirs and they have the right to do what they want to do with that material.

  3. Yeah, in a way I think copyright laws can allow an artist to be more creative and helps more art get out there in the world.

Can anyone explain what I mean by that?

  4. Since, freedom of speech is a significant part of being a US citizen, copyright is preventing it. The quote is saying that the original point of copyright was to promote the concept of free speech. I believe that copyright laws can do both promote and prevent. Depending on what the person's viewpoint is, the copyright laws change. Therefore, I disagree with the quote. Copyright doesn't give people the opportunity to free speech.

Copyright can give artists more leeway for creativity because the artist can now have his/her ideas to themselves without it being taken away.

  5. -I believe that that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was trying to say that without copyright, the ability of free speech would not be as great as it is without it

-I agree with this quote because of what Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was trying to say in simpler words

  6. I believe that this quote is trying to tell us that copyright is a way to spread a word. It's a way to express your opinions and ideas. Through copyright, I think the authors are able to state the opinions of their own and helps them tell others about these idea. I agree with this quote because I also believe that copyright is a significant way to speak up for your own beliefs. I think it helps the owners/authors tell about their ideas without taking it from others.

I think that's true, when you said, "copyright laws can allow an artist to be more creative and helps more art get out there in the world." If there weren't any copyright laws, everyone (including artists) might take/steal other peoples ideas and make it their own. This would prevent their creative side from coming out... or showing? Everyone wouldn't be their own, original, unique them. Copyright laws help everyone from copying others. It gives them the privilege/advantage to try their best and find their own unique qualities. TALENTS! Yes yes they help everyone find their own talents! Not what others thought of or came up with. Their own cool ideas would be able to be expressed thanks to the copyright laws!(Because no one would directly copy anything from others works.)

  7. I believe this quote is telling us that copyright gives us the freedom to say whatever we want without it being taken away from us. Because of copyright people can not take your words. Everyone is free to state his or her opinion on anything.
I agree with Ms.O'Connor. I think everyone has the right to get their word out. And in this process staying true to what they say without others jumping in and saying it was originally their idea.

  8. I agree with Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. I believe this quote is telling us that copyright is a way to express your words with security and without having anyone to steal it. It is a way to secure your work and not let people manipulate your expressions and thoughts. Copyright laws help us express our thoughts without having people take credit for it or even using it. I believe that we should be able to talk about anything we want and not being scared to say it.

  9. In my mind, this quote means that copyright, "the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute the matter and form of something" (www.merriam-webster.com) can help get our ideas and creations get out into the world. Firstly, it helps give out our ideas when no one can steal our creations from us, thus making the origin visible to everyone that views it, and giving the person credit for what they came up with. If others can take credit for what we did, it may seem like the original creator was never in the loop. For instance, if an artist creates a song and publishes it for the world to see, copyright would be by their side, so no one can steal the song and claim it as their own creation. This situation would be unfair if someone could just steal the song and become famous for it when it wasn't even their idea in the first place. Copyright works hand in hand with free speech because people can express themselves without the concern of another stealing their words or creations. All in all, I agree with the words of Ms. Sandra Day O’Connor.

  10. Although this is true that is used by unjust people who violate the llaw. If it is so much of a problem maby you should remove the abbility to copy of the internet. Also you could just use google to look up the programs and get rid of the programs. It isn't that hard to get rid of all the variables that make copyright a problem

  12. What the quote means is that copyright is very important in the United States, free speech (allowing to say anything a person wants as long as it is true) is much more important. I agree with what he is saying because the framers of SOPA are trying to take away nearly everyone's freedom of speech on the internet.

  13. What the quote is about is that copyright is needed in over the internet which grants people power over what they do. However SOPA is taking it away with a unlimited power to remove many informational sites. They give the people a chance to speak out and show others their opinions.

  14. This quote is telling us that copyright is a way to protect our originality by not legally letting people use our piece of work. But, S.O.P.A. is technically just snatching away everybody's freedom of speech to express their ideas and thoughts on things. I agree with everything Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is saying in this quote.

  15. I believe the only thing that this quote is doing is comparing between S.O.P.A. and copyright. Both this quote is saying that S.O.P.A. provides freedom of speech. At the same time, copyright supplies this freedom of speech. O'Conner expresses that the only difference is that copyright allows us to adjust what someone else has said and basically restating them while keeping hold of your freedom of speech. I agree with this, as she is correct. Americans use their freedom of speech at anytime, including this copyright law.

  16. I believe that this quote is telling us that copyright has a lot more to do with freedom of speech than people think. People think that S.O.P.A. eliminates all sort of freedom on speech on the internet when it really doesn't. In fact, this quotes means that since copyright had a lot to do with freedom of speech, S.O.P.A. is actually protecting it. I agree with Justice O'Conner. She is right about what she's talking about. S.O.P.A. does protect one of the most important things to this country. Also, another thing that Justice O'Conner meant with her quote is that copyright gives people the right to own more of what they say. They can become very creative with it and get paid for it. This Justice is not only saying that S.O.P.A. helps freedom of speech but also the economy. Although, both sides of this situation have many good arguments, I totally agree with Justice O'Conner. S.O.P.A. does protect freedom of speech while giving us a little more spare change in our pocket.

  17. I believe the quote by Justice O'Conner is saying copyright is more about freedom of what people think. S.O.P.A. isn't eliminating these different types of freedom of speech. This quote promoting S.O.P.A. because he is talking about piracy and plagiarism so when he is talking about freedom and copyright, he is promoting S.O.P.A.I disagree with Justice O'Conner because she is talking about freedom but shutting down the internet is making us lose our freedom. working on the internet is a job for lots of people and they get paid alot for that so their familys' can make a living. Without the internet some will not have jobs. lots of people major in college to work with computers. Is America going to take that hard work away?

  18. I believe this quote is trying to say that freedom of speech is not aliminated by putting up the S.O.P.A policy. They are saying that copyrightimg is illigal but freedom of speech still exists. People are just exaggerating the freedom of speech thing.. I agree with Justice O'Conner he is just trying to protect freedom of speech by making copyright mors strict. This is amazing because it is protecring us while helping us get a little bit more of our hard earned true American money!

  19. It is within my belief that Justice O'Connor was trying to say that copyright is what allows us to have freedom of expression. I believe that what she is trying to say is that S.O.P.A is a way of power for people, however it is built on the empty promise of a better way of privacy on the web.

  20. What this quote means to me is that people cannot stop free speech S.O.P.A.it merely slows us down a bit.

  21. To me this quote means that you can take someone's words and sell them and spread them. You can make money off of what others are saying. In a way I do agree because in a way you are still giving the right owner credit for what they have done or said. You are simply just spreading it around. It is almost like a trend. When someone starts to do something and someone else does it also. You are still giving credit to them you are just spreading it around and making it known.

  22. I agree with this quote. To me this quote means that if you have an original idea you are able to keep it for your self without people taking it unfairly. And it is as important as free speech.
